inetd

It is usual to run qmail's smtp daemon from inetd with tcp wrappers. This allows the smtp daemon to know when it is talking to local users and should relay, and remote users for whom it should not relay.

The only problem with inetd is that under heavy load inetd decides that the service is looping, and suspends it! (Aarggghh again!)

Use Dan Bernstein's tcpserver/tcpcontrol and all is well again, and there is a maximum connection limit imposed. Nice.
